Plan ahead for emergencies by packing kits and rehearsing where and how family members will reach safety and contact each other. These simple steps may prove invaluable should an emergency arise.
Emergency Supply Kits
Different kits should be assembled for the home, car, and work.
They should include:
Car: Food, water, first aid supplies, jumper cables, sleeping bag and blankets.
Work: Food, water, and comfortable walking shoes.
Home: A basic portable kit should be prepared, as well as an expanded kit in case you are able to remain in your home. FEMA suggests a shelter kit with supplies that will last up to two weeks.
Special Needs/Pets
Take extra precaution for family members with special needs -- pregnant or
nursing women, infants and children, elderly, disabled.
Also, have emergency supplies on hand for pets.
Escape Route and Emergency Plans
Set up and rehearse escape routes from your home and community. Make sure
all family members understand the plan. Also, have a plan on how to contact
each other in event of an emergency
